The 5th international symposium on railway operations research successfully convened


On December 1-2, 2018, the 5th International Symposium on Railway Operations Research was successfully held in Shen Zhen Hotel by the School of Traffic and Transportation, Beijing Jiaotong University. With the topic of “Improving the Effectiveness and Efficiency of Railway System”, this symposium invited nearly 20 professors, majored in railway operation research and traffic big data, from nine countries and regions including the United States, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Japan. The professors and representatives of Shanghai Casco Signal Ltd made reports on the symposium, and discussed with domestic experts, scholars and students on the hot issues of the current railway system operation.

The Organizing committee of this symposium is composed of Lei Nie, Dean of School of Transportation and Transportation of Beijing Jiaotong University, Tao Tang, Director of State Key Laboratory of Rail Traffic Control and Safety, Limin Jia, Deputy Director of State Key Laboratory of Rail Traffic Control and Safety, Ingo Arne Hansen, Vice President of the International Association of Railway Operations Research (IAROR), Liang Gao, Vice Dean of School of Civil and Engineering of Beijing Jiaotong University, Lingyun Meng, Vice Dean from School of Traffic and Transportation of Beijing Jiaotong University, and Xiaopei Cai, Associate Professor from School of Civil and Engineering of Beijing Jiaotong University.
The meeting lasted two days and the main events included:
(1) On December 1st to the morning of December 2nd, domestic and foreign experts made relevant discussions on the effectiveness and efficiency improvement of the railway system. The symposium  was divided into three parts, presided by Lei Nie, Lingyun Meng and Baoming Han.
(2) On the afternoon of December 2nd, visiting Fengtai West Station.
The symposium was first delivered by Lei Nie on behalf of the organizing committee. She introduced the experience of the 4 International Symposiums on Railway Operation Research held by Beijing Jiaotong University and proposed the purpose of the symposium that a discussion and exchange platform for railway operation optimization, big data analysis, operation scheme, train diagram and rolling stock assignment integration optimization, high-speed railway infrastructure, train dispatching controlling and so on.

Zhongliang Guan, Vice President of Beijing Jiaotong University, delivered an important speech. He first expressed his welcome to the professors, teachers and students who participated in the international symposium on railway operation research. Then he introduced the history and development status of Beijing Jiaotong University and fruitful results achieved in recent years.  Finally, he pointed out that the International Symposium on Railway Operation Research has far-reaching significance for the development of scientific research and the railway industry and wished this symposium a successful convening.

 Subsequently, the symposium officially began. 20 guests made presentations on the hot issues of railway operation adjustment, delay management, risk management, etc., and actively communicated with the participants.





After the symposium, under the leadership of Lingyun Meng, the participating experts visited and investigated the Fengtai West Station, learning about the development status of China's railway and the series achievements, as well as the next innovation and development trend. So far, the 5th International Symposium on Railway Operation Research has been successfully concluded.
 



After the symposium, the delegation of the participating experts visited the 901 Laboratory of Keji Building of Beijing Jiaotong University, the State Key Laboratory of Rail Traffic Control and Safety, and the Transportation Equipment Museum. Lingyun Meng personally gave explanation of them. Later, he held talks, with teachers from School of Traffic and Transportation and foreign experts joining in, to discuss the possibility of future cooperation, which played a great role in promoting the international development of the school.

The International Symposium on Railway Operation Research has been held for five consecutive sessions. The conference provides a broad communication platform for gathering international high-quality scientific research resources, promoting international frontier cooperation research, and solving practical problems of China's railways. It has achieved good social response and we will continue to carry forward, innovate and hold more high-quality symposium to promote the vigorous development of China's railway.
